Leading for most of the way, the Central men’s basketball team in Waverly fell just a few points short of sweeping two difficult road games to begin their conference schedule last week. Turning the ball over 16 times hurt the Dutch in their 81 – 78 loss to Wartburg on Saturday to drop them to 1 – 1 after two league tests. The good news: Colby Taylor is looking sharp, with back-to-back 25-plus point efforts, Ryan Kunkel recorded, unofficially (for now), six blocks, and they were even with the Knights in rebounding at 43 per side. Coach Craig Douma knows his team let one get away, but with how deep the Iowa Conference appears to be, he’s confident his team will bounce back with plenty of games still to go. The Dubuque swing is next on the docket for Central, starting at home tomorrow against a pair of veteran and difficult Spartan squads.
