$20 counterfeit bills are circulating in Knoxville.

Knoxville Police Chief Dan Losada says to be aware of the fake bills. He says most counterfeits are poorly done on plain paper using a printer or copier that spray the ink on the paper. Real bills are printed on a press that imbeds the ink in the paper that you can feel. He suggests business owners buy the counterfeit detection pens to check larger bills.

Here are a few more quick clues people can look for.

Does the paper feel right?
Does it look the right color? Does it Run when wet?
Can you feel the texture of the printing?
Are the lines crisp or muddy?
Does the ink in the lower right corner shift color from gold to green as you tilt the bill?
Are the edges of the bill straight with equal margins?
Can you see the watermark when held up to a light?
Is the security stripe present?
Can you see the red and blue security threads on the bill?
