Two people were placed in custody following a four vehicle crash Saturday afternoon at the Highway 163 and Washington Street interchange in Pella.

Both the Pella Police Department and Marion County Sheriff’s Office received half a dozen calls for an erratic white pickup heading eastbound on 163 at approximately 3:30 p.m. Witnesses told police the driver, a 15 year old female from Ottumwa, was topping speeds of 90 MPH and then slamming on the brakes to slow down.

Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky tells KNIA/KRLS News multiple officers from his department set up to stop the vehicle. After their initial attempt, the driver tried to flee onto Washington Street off of 163 at Mile Marker 40. Bokinsky says in a matter of moments, the operator sped up to nearly 60 MPH coming off of the exit ramp before slamming into the back of a vehicle, which hit another in a chain reaction.

While attempting to arrest the girl and an adult passenger, identified as 18-year-old Nathaniel Van Steenwyk of Ottuwma, the pickup rolled into a police cruiser. The Pella Police Department cited the juvenile driver for multiple traffic violations, and Van Steenwyk, the owner of the vehicle, with allowing an unlicensed driver to improperly operate a vehicle. Criminal charges are pending additional investigation from the department.

No major injuries were reported, and Pella Ambulance responded, but did not transport anyone to a hospital.
