Early offense and a defense that did not allow a field goal until 11 minutes into the ballgame was the story of Pella Christian’s 66 – 28 victory over Pleasantville in last night Class 2A district semifinal. The Eagles made six shots from beyond the arc and held the Trojans to just one free throw in an 18 – 1 first quarter. They expanded upon that lead to 29 – 6 by the end of the half. Trojans’ Coach, Joel Allman, says the lack of fireworks to start hurt his team in the end. Pella Christian committed just eight turnovers for the game, and had three players in double figures; Mitch Fopma scored a game-high 19, Levi Jungling put in 14, and Jeremy Van Beek added 12. Overall, Coach Larry Hessing was happy with how his Eagles performed, and says their performance in the first 16 minutes was almost a carbon copy of another win they earned down the stretch of the regular season. Brady Elder powered the Trojans with 11 points, and Gauge VanHaalen went 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Pleasantville ends their season with a 14 – 8 record, while the Eagles improve to 14 – 9, and they take on Albia in the district final in Oskaloosa this Tuesday night.
