Leading from opening tip to final buzzer, the Pella Christian boys’ basketball team made quick work of the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Rockets in Monday night’s Class 2A district tournament opener, winning 82 – 58. The Eagles used a 28 – 9 advantage in the first quarter, including five three-pointers, to build a nearly insurmountable lead the Rockets couldn’t overcome. Four different players wound up in double figures in the points’ column, led by Levi Jungling’s 19, Graham Howerzyl and Mitch Fopma’s 11, and Kenden Veenstra came off the bench and contributed ten. Coach Larry Hessing says it’s a great start, but there’s still much work to do before Thursday’s semifinal. Pleasantville will host the 13 – 9 Eagles in the nightcap of a doubleheader that is preceded by Albia vs. Van Buren. The winners of the two affairs will meet in the district final in Oskaloosa next Tuesday.
