In front of a packed P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium crowd, the Central women’s basketball team nearly pulled off a monumental comeback against Coe on Saturday. However, the Kohawk women prevailed, 66 – 61. The Dutch trailed by as much as 20 in the first quarter, and also found themselves behind by 17 at one point in the third quarter. It was 26 – 9 after the opening ten minutes, but the relentless Dutch outscored Coe, 42 – 27, over the next two frames and, with under a minute left, held a 61 – 60 advantage. A three-point play by Coe’s Aleena Hobbs gave her team the final lead change of the day. Claire Marburger had another torrid game, with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Alison Malaby and Jackie Kriegel each pulled down 11 rebounds. Central’s men led wire-to-wire in an 84 – 63 thrashing of the Kohawks. Trashawn Boyd got the start in place of Austin Hauser, and he went off for 20 points and six assists, and teammate Austin Glawe scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Coach Craig Douma says this was a special game for Trashawn. Central’s men improve to 13 – 6 overall and 4 – 4 in the Iowa Conference; the women drop to 4 – 15 and 1 – 7, respectively. They remain at home this Wednesday for a double bout with Luther.
