The Pella Christian boys basketball team continued their dominant postseason run to return to the Well for the second consecutive season Saturday night.

The Eagles earned their 13th trip to the state basketball tournament in program history with their 68-47 Substate victory over West Burlington, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

Despite a sloppier than usual first half, including 10 turnovers and three players in foul trouble, a flurry of six PC threes iced the game in a 26-point third quarter.

Senior Mitch Fopma had one of the best games of his career, leading the way with 26 points and six three-pointers. He told KNIA/KRLS after the game the way the team adjusted after the halftime break was a sample of how they’ve been playing throughout the playoffs.

“We just weren’t playing like we were practicing [before the half], which obviously didn’t help us at the beginning when we kept getting those blocking fouls down by the baseline,” Fopma says. “But once we got that figured out at halftime, we just exploded and ended up taking a 20 point lead.”

Levi Jungling posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and the team hit 12 shots from beyond the arc on the night. Head Coach Larry Hessing will make his 10th ever state tourney appearance.

Pella Christian is now 16-9, and winners of eight in a row. They will play No. 1 seeded and undefeated Dike-New Hartford in the quarterfinals on Monday, March 7th at 8:15 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena, which will be live on 92.1 KRLS.
