The Eagles’ boys basketball team continued their blistering play in the 2016 postseason, making short work of the Albia Blue Demons last night 58-33 in the district final heard live on KNIA.

An 8-0 run and series of buckets at the end of the 2nd period by Levi Jungling seemed to spark an otherwise stagnant offensive first half for PC, and gave the Class 2A District 12 champs a sizable lead they wouldn’t let go of.

Pella Christian’s defense locked down the Albia attack, especially in the 3rd quarter when they outscored them 19-3.

Head Coach Larry Hessing said the keys to their now seven-game winning streak and beating their rival was the emergence of their dominant defense and of the growth of the team around their leader Levi.

“We got our defense settled in, we got some things cleaned up there, and we’re all on the same page as to what we want to defensively, I give Coach [Marv] Van Wyk a lot of credit for that,” Hessing says.

Jungling led all players with 20 points, six boards and a pair of steals, Mitch Fopma scored 10 and grabbed seven rebounds, and four other Eagles racked up six or more points.

Pella Christian will play West Burlington, who beat Pekin 56-52, in the Class 2A Substate 6 final for the right to go to state Saturday at 7 p.m. in Fairfield, a game that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
