The Iowa Legislature is in the midst of coming up with solutions to numerous issues during the shorter session this winter.

A few bills have been brought to the Iowa House that would extend a one-cent sales tax for school funding, and while each have different versions, one including the governor’s water quality proposal is absent. During the condition of the state, Governor Terry Branstad proposed using the growth of the sales tax to pay for water quality initiatives.

State Senator Ken Rozenboom, who serves on the natural resources committee in the Senate, feels some of the water quality warnings are overblown, and that the governor’s proposal may draw money away from school infrastructure. Rozenboom doesn’t anticipate the diversion of state tax funds to water quality projects this session.
