The state is bracing for a major winter storm Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, widespread moderate to heavy snow is expected throughout central Iowa, with winds at times gusting up to 40 MPH.

Travel will not be advised during the peak of the storm, which is expected to take place before noon, with additional snow expected after a break mid-afternoon. Whiteout conditions possible, as are large snow drifts on area roadways, mainly northwest of Marion County.

Due to a shift in the track of the storm, anywhere between two to six inches is predicted, with higher totals northwest of a line from Melcher-Dallas to Pella, and less to the southeast portions of the county.
