Ben Tysseling’s lay-up in the closing seconds pushed Pella High over the century mark for the first time this year, and put a handful of exclamation points at the end of the boys’ basketball season with a 101 – 67 victory over Chariton in the Class 3A state consolation game on Saturday. Pella never trailed in the contest, they are the first team to score over 100 points in the state tournament since 1996, and dominated nearly every statistical category; they forced 26 turnovers, which the Little Dutch converted into 43 points, had 32 fast break points, scored 58 of their 101 in the paint, and the bench outscored the Chargers, 32 – 5. Pella also came up with 17 steals to give them a total of 49 for the tournament. Ryan Van Wyk scored 21 points, Payson Vande Lune had 16, Grant Judkins put in 13, and Will Warner added a dozen. The Little Dutch finish their season with a 24 – 2 record and third place in the Class 3A state tournament. Their only two losses came to teams that played in the state championship game: West Des Moines Valley and Cedar Rapids Xavier. Pella graduates six players from their 2015-16 roster.
