After dropping at 8 – 1 decision in the first game of their Iowa-Conference opening doubleheader to Luther, the Central baseball team battled back late to win a game two that featured seven total home runs, 20 – 17 on Saturday. The Dutch squandered several opportunities in the seven-inning affair, stranding the bases loaded twice early on, but managing to stay tied with the Norse at one. Walks and errors cost Central late, and they fell by seven. With winds blowing out to left field, game two provided the offensive spark for both schools. Luther quickly got out to a 7 – 0 lead, and held leads of 8 – 1, 9 – 1, 9 – 2, and 10 – 2 entering the bottom of the sixth. Catcher Mike Reuter drilled a three-run blast over the fence, and a few batters later, Noah Stochl clobbered a grand slam to get Central within one. The Norse answered back with four more runs to extend their lead to five, but Central had another rally in them. The Dutch sent 15 batters to the plate in the seventh, Reuter and Spencer Gritsch went back-to-back out of the park, and freshman Ryan Bouwman hit a game-tying, bases-clearing double in an 11-run frame that gave the Dutch the lead for good. Central concluded their four-game set with Luther yesterday afternoon by splitting another doubleheader; falling in game one, 3 – 1, and coming from behind, again, to win 8 – 7 in the nightcap. Kyle Crampton had a pinch-hit two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Dutch the win. Central is 4 – 9 on the year, and 2 – 2 in league play. They will return to the diamond tomorrow in Indianola for a doubleheader against Simpson.
