More late-inning heroics were had by the Central baseball team on Friday in their series-opening doubleheader sweep of Coe. After dispatching the Kohawks 13 – 3 in the 7-inning contest, The Dutch fell behind early 3 – 0, and slowly chipped away at Coe’s lead before winding up on top in walk-off fashion, 4 – 3. Ryan Garrett had a solo home run to cut the lead down to two, and the Dutch added another in the sixth on an error. Central had problems trying to solve Coe’s staff ace, Zach Kammin, who struck out 13 batters in eight innings of work. The Dutch were quick to attack in the ninth; Mike Reuter slapped a pinch-hit double with one out, and three consecutive hits, capped off by Noah Stochl’s dribbler through a drawn-in infield, allowed Central to steal the sweep. Billy Coppage got the win on the mound, working four innings of relief and allowing one hit, one walk, and striking out four. Coach Matt Schirm says it’s another example of the team’s never-say-die attitude this season. Central improves to 6 – 9 on the season and 4 – 2 in the Iowa Conference. They wrap up their four-game series with Coe this afternoon with another doubleheader.
