A bill that originated with County Attorney Ed Bull has been signed by Governor Branstad.
Governor Branstad signed Senate File 2185 (otherwise known as the “Peeping Tom” bill) which toughens the penalties on invasion of privacy. Because of the lack of clarity in the old law, window peepers escaped any consequences on mere technicalities. Bull brought the bill to the legislature after he unsuccessfully prosecuted a peeping case where the victim was wrapped in a towel after getting out of the shower. Governor Branstad’s signature changes the law, making observing someone who has a clear expectation of privacy fit the definition of peeping. Bull tells KNIA/KRLS News he is proud that the bill passed unanimously and with bipartisan support. Bull says legislators Greg Heartsill and Amy Sinclair worked hard to promote the legislation and cooperated with Democrats.
