Competing on two separate fields in two different towns, the Pella High boys’ and girls’ soccer teams each wound up with their first 2016 Little Hawkeye Conference triumphs last night. The Pella boys’ soccer team earned an all-important first conference two-nil victory over Grinnell. Head Coach Mark Solomon says the win is an important step in the overall growth of the young squad. Those two goals came in the second half, including a score by Ethan Poulter and the second by Will Warner on a penalty kick. Pella moves to 2-2 on the season and the Little Dutch travel to Indianola on Friday. The Lady Dutch did not look their sharpest, but still found a way to come from behind and win, 4 – 3, over the Tigers. Grinnell outshot Pella, 11 – 10, and got off to a fast 2 – 0 lead with a goal in the 12’ and another about 90 seconds later. Grace Held put Pella High on the board, and four minutes later, Kayla Langstraat gave Pella their first lead of the night with about 17 minutes left in the first half, with back-to-back goals in only a 72 second period. After the Tigers scored 20 seconds into the second half to tie, Katie Vander Molen scored the game-winner in the 25’. Pella’s girls are now 5 – 0, and they return to the pitch next Tuesday at home versus Pella Christian.
