Coach Mark Howard tells KNIA/KRLS Sports that his team practices penalty kicks at the end of every practice. It paid off last night for the Pella High girls’ soccer team as they beat Newton, 3 – 1 in penalty kicks to win the match 1 – 0. Not a goal was scored in the 80 minutes of regulation nor in the two overtime periods. Samantha Fuller was the star of the shootout, making amazing save after amazing save. Pella outshot the Cardinals for the game, 24 – 14, and had 14 of those shots on goal. Maddie Canfield, Bellara Huang, and Kiara Bradley all scored in the penalty kicks for Pella, who improves to 9 – 2 overall. Despite an overall strong effort, the Little Dutch could not match Newton, and they dropped a 3 – 0 decision. They are 7 – 8 this year now, and they go to Mount Pleasant this Friday, while the Lady Dutch host Marshalltown.
