The name of a man killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash north of the Pella city limits has been released.

Matthew Jay Rolffs, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical examiner this morning. The Pella Police Department dispatch office received a call at 6:54 a.m. of a car split in half in the front lawn of a home at the corner of North Oaks Drive and 228th Place.

Investigators with the Iowa State Patrol determined Rolffs was operating a 1993 Honda Accord southbound on 228th Pl during the overnight hours. They say Rolffs lost control of the car at a speed well in excess of the posted 35 MPH limit and left the roadway on the right side into the west ditch. His vehicle hit a tree in the front lawn of the home at 599 228th place, which split the car in half. The Iowa State Patrol reports he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact, and Rolffs was ejected.

The Iowa State Patrol is handling the continuing investigation. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Pella Police, Pella Ambulance, and the Pella Fire Department all assisted.
