A new beer with a local and historic flair will make its debut at Tulip Time.

De Molenaars Bier, translated to “The Miller’s Beer,” will be on tap at the Cellar Peanut Pub beginning Thursday.

Pella Historical Society President Lori Ellingson says Peace Tree Brewing Co. is responsible for the new wheat draft.

“There is only so many things that wheat is used for, but when you think about those items, wheat beer is pretty popular,” she tells KNIA/KRLS. “And we just didn’t know if Peace Tree had a different wheat beer, if they were already using a source for their wheat, but when we approached them they were happy to give this a try.”

She says the ground wheat used in the brew comes from Pella Historical Society’s Vermeer Mill.

“For bread [the wheat] has to get down to a fine flour, but for beer from what I understand they really only want that wheat berry cracked,” Ellingson says. “It was an entirely different process that our millers had to learn.”

De Molenaars Bier is a Dutch-Style Kuit, a style popular in the Netherlands during the 15th and 16th centuries.
