The XXXI Olympiad in Rio De Janeiro may have some local company come August. Former Central men’s track and field standout, Kurtis Brondyke, will be vying for a spot on the men’s decathlon team for the 2016 Summer Olympics. The U.S. Olympic Team Trails begin tomorrow and run through July 10 in Eugene, Oregon. The Dutch alum qualified 13th out of 18 competitors with a personal-best score of 7,795 at the Texas Greatest Athlete Meet earlier this month. The leader is the 2012 London Olympics gold medalist, Ashton Eaton, who sits at 9,045 points. Brondyke says the atmosphere will be different to compete in front of as the competition, as well as the stakes, are kicked up a notch. Brondyke was a four-time All-American in Division III, and was the national indoor champion in 2011 in the pentathlon. Decathlon qualifying will begin at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday with the 100-meter dash, and will conclude on Sunday with the 1,500-meter run at a little after 5:30 p.m.
