The Nos. 4 and 5 seeds square off at Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines this afternoon for the first round of the Class 1A state boys’ soccer tournament. Pella Christian and Iowa City Regina are familiar foes on the football field, but are strangers on the soccer field. This is the Eagles’ first time at the state tournament, while the Regals are going after their sixth state championship. The “terrible twosome” of Gabriel Soler and Davi Simoes will be in the crosshairs of Regina’s defenses, as the tandem has combined for 32 of PC’s 50 goals this year, plus 22 assists. The Regals also have two powerful offensive juggernauts; Emilio Tovar and Nich Pechous have 37 goals total along with 18 assists. The 4-5 match-up begins at 12:05 p.m. on Field #7 in Des Moines at the Cownie Soccer Complex, with the winner more than likely facing Beckman Catholic in the state semifinals on Friday.
