It was perhaps the softball equivalent of Stephen Strasburg going up against Clayton Kershaw. Oskaloosa’s Kylee Silliman no-hit Pella Christian last night and won a pitcher’s duel, 1 – 0, in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS. The Indians only had three hits against PC’s Emma Schnell, but the biggest one came with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. With a runner at first base, Devan Welch hit a fly ball to right field that just went off the top of the glove of Hanna Vos, allowing the game’s only run to score. The Eagles’ only base-runner came when Schnell was hit by a pitch to begin the third inning. Coach Karen Harrill says she had a feeling it was going to be tight in the early going and just a few inches of leather was the difference. Pella Christian’s record drops to 15 – 5 this year.

Up the hill on the baseball diamond, the Eagles shutout the Indians, 5 – 0. Cole Vande Voort drove in what turned out to be the game-winning run with an RBI single in the second, Isaac Vander Hart and Lawson Bruxvoort both also had an RBI knock in the same frame. Bruxvoort added a two-run base hit in the top of the seventh for extra insurance, and Scott Haveman threw a four-hit complete-game shutout to earn the win. PC baseball improves to 13 – 8, and both teams are off until tomorrow to travel across town to face Pella High.
