Lewis Central dominated early and defeated Pella High on Saturday, 5 – 0 in the Class 2A state championship game. With heat indices eclipsing the 100 degree mark and players falling down as they were headed to the sidelines, the Titans scored three times after the first scheduled water break in the first half, and dominated in shots on goal, 17 – 5. The whistles were blowing often, mostly against Pella; their aggressive style led to 12 fouls called against them, and many free kick opportunities for the Titans. Pella’s ladies conclude the 2016 spring season with a 16 – 5 record, and graduate just four players. Coach Mark Howard says that his team will “be back next year” to the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines. The awards rolled in for Pella and their historic season; Katie Vander Molen, Kiara Bradley, and Kayla Langstraat were picked to the all-tournament team, and Mark Howard was named the Class 2A State Coach of the Year. This was the second time in program history the Pella girls’ soccer team made it to the state championship game.
