A six-run, 11-batter fifth inning gave Pella Christian all the offense they needed in a 6 – 4 win to cap off a doubleheader sweep of Newton baseball yesterday, in a game heard live on KNIAKRLS.com. After Mac Sarver pitched a masterful 2 – 0 complete game shutout to begin the night, the Eagles’ offense stayed stagnant in game two. Three PC errors in the third gave the Cardinals an early advantage. An error on a potential inning-ending double-play ball by Newton’s shortstop helped extend the inning to give the Eagles their opportunity to break through. Sarver had the game-winning two-run single in the fifth, Will Dembski also had a two-run base knock, and Kyle Sneller earned the win on the mound with five innings of work, and Clay Stravers allowed one run in two innings to pick up a save. Coach Nathan Johnson gave credit to how his Eagles fought with the leather on their hands. The Eagles’ record swells to 11 – 7, and they’ll host tournament action this morning, starting with a game against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

Pella Christian softball played a thriller with Newton, and walked off on an error with a 3 – 2 win. The score was tied at one after regulation, but the Cardinals hit a pair of doubles to push across the go-ahead run. A pair of base hits and fielding errors by Newton in the bottom of the inning allowed PC to grab the win. Lizzy Van Manen had two hits for the Eagles, who are now 13 – 4 this year and 5 – 2 in conference play. They will be playing in another tournament at Oskaloosa later today.
