Gun safety has been at the forefront of national discussion as tragedies such as mass shootings and accidental deaths continue to make headlines.

Lt. Shane Cox with the Pella Police Department says the key to safe gun ownership is responsibility, both when handling and storing firearms.

Cox says while it may seem like common sense, remembering core principles when using guns can reduce the risk of serious injury and even fatalities.

“Treat every gun as if it’s loaded, make sure the muzzle isn’t pointed at something you are not wiling to destroy, and know what’s beyond your target,” he says.

The Pella Police Department can help find suitable locks for gun cases and additional safety training during regular hours at their station on Liberty Street.
