With the regular season winding down, Pella High baseball and softball each fell to Newton at home last night. An anemic Cardinal baseball offense attacked for seven hits and took advantage of a pair of Little Dutch errors in their 5 – 1 defeat of Pella. Payton Shull had two hits, Jaden Rollfs drove in two runs, and Ben Tiskevics had a perfect inning of relief pitching on the mound. Pella is now 21 – 7 this season. The Lady Dutch held a 6 – 1 lead going into the sixth, but Newton stormed back and won in extra innings, 8 – 6. Riley Slycord slugged a two-run homer in the top of the eighth for the Cardinals to give them the edge. Lydia Dingeman had a two-run single in the first and Courtney Thompson contributed an RBI knock in the third. Pella’s girls have lost seven of their last eight and fall to 14 – 17 on the season. They will play at Chariton on Friday, while the Little Dutch will continue a suspended game against Bondurant-Farrar tonight; Pella will resume play with a 7 – 1 lead over the Bluejays in the second inning.
