Two one-run pitching efforts pushed the Pella High baseball team to a 7 – 0 conference record last night in their doubleheader against Newton. Game one went to the Little Dutch, 3 – 1; Tyler Hillman threw a complete game, striking out seven. Caleb Piersma was 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and Avery Van Zee also had two hits and drove in a run. Grant Judkins was a menace yet again on the mound and at the plate in the nightcap, helping his Dutch defeat the Cardinals, 6 – 1 to complete the sweep. Judkins pitched all seven innings and struck out nine Newton batters. He also added a three-run homer in the first inning and finished with two hits and five RBI for the game. Soren Stelter also had two hits and scored two runs. Pella improves to 12 – 4 overall with the wins. The Lady Dutch could only score one run against Newton in their 8 – 1 loss yesterday. Pella was outhit by the Cardinals, 14 – 4. Their four knocks came from Sara Tallman, Hannah Emmert, Lydia Dingeman, and Elly Cairney. Pella softball falls to 8 – 8 overall and 0 – 5 in conference play. The girls will play Knoxville tonight, in a game that will be live on 92.1 KRLS and KNIAKRLS.com. The Little Dutch return to the diamond on Wednesday versus Oskaloosa.
