Pella residents had the opportunity to learn more about the firearms law enforcement officers use during the Citizen’s Police Academy this week.

Officer Shawn Veenstra and Lt. Shane Cox held a demonstration at the department’s firing range south of Pella, and those in attendance had the opportunity to test fire a glock pistol and a rifle. Veenstra tells KNIA/KRLS News participants in the police academy are learning about topics covering many of the aspects of life in law enforcement.

“This is week four, and so far we’ve covered some administrative stuff, we’ve done crime scenes, we’ve done building searches, and have made them aware of different narcotics in Pella,” he says.

“We’re going to do traffic investigation, we’re actually going to go through traffic stops, and we’ll have them do those traffic stops so they can kind of feel how an officer feels when they make a traffic stop and face the unknown.”

He says signups are available at the Pella Police Department for the September session, which begins at the end of that month and lasts for eight weeks.
