Drowning is the nation’s second leading cause of accidental death, and law enforcement around the country is hoping those enjoying lakes and rivers can do so safely.

Park Ranger Tracy Spry says statistics show that 90 percent of those who drown at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lakes and rivers may have survived if they had worn a life jacket. Spry says drowning is often silent and quick, and encourages supervision of kids in open water at all times, as it takes only 20 seconds for a child to drown and it can happen within 10 feet of safety.
