High school students from around the state gathered in Pella this week to challenge themselves in the world of business.
The Business Horizons program was hosted at Central College and participants had an opportunity to learn about various aspects of different industries.
Ryan Van Maanen, a Pella High School senior this fall, tells KNIA/KRLS News students paired with one another to take junk and turn it into a product they would pitch at the end of the experience.
“Ours consisted of stuff like a vacuum cleaner, an old, toy car that was broken, and a computer mouse,” he says. “And when we put those together, we had to kind of use some creativity and see what that would make. So we decided to go with an alternative energy source.”
Van Maanen says different team members had different roles.
“We create a company and make a background with it,” he says. “We decided to make Skyline Innovations–it was kind of ringy, and it had to do with product, because our product is actually supposed to capture lightning and use that as an energy source.”
Participants in the Business Horizons program had the opportunity to tour local corporations and meet with employees of those industries as part of the experience.
