The only one of the 50 states that plays baseball and softball during the summer, Iowa’s college coaches and high school athletes see many benefits to a “warmer” schedule each year. As of now, there are four sports that perform in the spring in Iowa: track and field, soccer, tennis, and golf. Not only would adding baseball and softball to the mix make it a nightmare for AD’s to schedule games during the season, but the talent pool would be thin for several schools to spread across a maximum five sports. College coaches are also very happy with the way things are set-up, especially at Central. Dutch softball coach, George Wares, says another big plus is that he and his coaching staff can attend several different games without worry of conflicting with their own season. Wares adds he hopes the state continues holding the softball season during the summer months, saying the players see the most benefit from playing at the high school level as opposed to participating in the travelling leagues around the region.
