Injuries are never a thing that a team likes to have no matter what part of the season they happen in. Every team, while hoping they do not have to deal with players being out due to an injury, plan for such things. The Knoxville Baseball Squad was hit with a major injury scare last week when starting catcher Calyn Bumgartner went out with a mouth injury during a game last week. In his place has been Sophomore Patrick Crawford. Coach Joel Johnson tells KNIA/KRLS Sports Crawford’s improvement this season while being forced into varsity action a little earlier than expected has impressed everyone. An example of how much Crawford has improved…last Wednesday in the Panthers’ game against Centerville, Crawford fired a ball to Jack McDonald at second base to gun down a runner trying to steal, then tagged out another runner trying to steam home. Bumgartner, meanwhile, has been cleared to play and was the designated hitter in Monday’s win over Newton.
