The Iowa Department of Transportation has offered an explanation of the changed signage on northbound Highway 5 at the junction of Highways 5 and 92, omitting mention of Knoxville and Lake Red Rock.
Kurtis Younkin with the DOT says they have been changing the signage for side roads approaching interchanges. Younkin tells KNIA/KRLS News the most important piece of information a driver needs when approaching an interchange is which way to turn to enter the freeway. By removing the information for the straight ahead destinations, the decision is made easier with less information to read and process, and the lettering is larger. Younkin adds 100 interchanges have had signage replaced, and there have been no complaints from drivers not being able to find the straight ahead destinations.
