Marion County residents have reported a scam from people claiming to work for the government.
Scammers tell the victim they have been selected by the government for a $10,000 grant for home improvement or other benefits. The scammer asks the victim to go to a pharmacy or retail store and purchase a prepaid card. The victim gives the number off the card over the phone to the scammer who promises to Western Union money to the consumer. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office cautions residents not to respond to these calls and says victims of fraud should report the crime to local law enforcement.
