One of a small, select group of decathletes to have a chance to compete for the U.S. Olympic Team at the 2016 Summer Games, Kurtis Brondyke is off to another competition in Arkansas for the 23rd annual Thorpe Cup this weekend. The Thorpe Cup annually pits athletes from the U.S. against Germany in the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon. There are seven athletes from each country for each competition and is scored individually and on a team basis. Brondyke put up a score of 7,614 at the Olympic Trials at the beginning of the month to finish 11th overall, and he’ll be joined by six others that he competed against in Eugene, Oregon. Last year, Brondyke placed 11th at the Thorpe Cup in Germany with a total tally of 6,547 points. Things get underway at John McDonnell Field at the University of Arkansas with opening ceremonies at 4:45 p.m. today, with the conclusion of the event on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. after the 1,500 meter run.
