Nick Finney was given opportunities to play quarterback for the Pella High football team over the past two seasons. Now, he’s the man.
In his sophomore and junior campaigns, Finney resided behind the all-world talents of the now graduated Noah Clayberg on the depth chart. The Little Dutch won many of their games convincingly in those two seasons, giving Finney a chance to take snaps behind center.
He completed 32 of his 57 pass attempts for 588 yards, with 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran 61 times for 393 yards and six scores, including an 82 yarder during his sophomore season.
Pella Coach Jay McKinstrey says that Finney is very talented, and he’s excited about having him as his signal caller this season.
“He’s got really good feet, and he’s going to throw the ball well. You saw some of that last year against DCG in the second game when we got him some time. He’s a great leader too. He’s a humble young man and very intelligent. And I think the kids really respect him, so if he’ll speak into a situation, they’re going to listen and follow him – that’s a great thing.”
Finney was a starting corner back for the Dutch defense last season. McKinstrey says that he’s too talented to keep off the field entirely on D, but they will monitor those minutes to keep him fresh on offense.
Pella opens its season a week from Friday at home against Oskaloosa. Fans can get their first look at Finney and the Little Dutch this Friday with their annual Gatorade scrimmage.
