With just two seniors on the team last season, the Central College men’s soccer team was a disappointing 4-13. Coach Gary Laidlaw is hoping for better this year.
The lack of seniors meant more playing time for underclassmen, including five players who are now seniors and seven who are now juniors that have significant minutes under their belt.
Laidlaw says that those players have used this offseason to build even more on-field comradery within the group.
“We had a lot of guys go abroad last semester. The six or seven kids that studied abroad played over there – and had some success. In addition to that, we had our spring season, albeit with smaller numbers, but we thought it was one of our more productive spring seasons.”
Laidlaw says that several members of the team then played in a summer tournament together, as well as the Iowa games, with good success.
The Dutch will find out how much the offseason work has paid off when they open the season Labor Day weekend in Michigan against Alma and Olivet.
