The Central College women’s golf team has finished second place in the Iowa Conference each of the last three seasons, and five of the six years that Tim Wilkinson has been at the helm.
But the Dutch haven’t yet been able to catch Wartburg, who has won the last nine IIAC meets.
The Knights lost three seniors from last year’s team, but do bring back who Wilkinson says are arguably the two best players in the league. Meanwhile, the Dutch have two returning players who each finished in the top 10 of the individual standings last year – sophomore Brittany Coppess and junior Cierra Pulse.
Wilkinson says that on paper, they definitely have a chance to dethrone the Knights.
“If you do the math, it’s relatively close. But just like we have maybe made up some strokes on Wartburg on paper, Luther is right behind us. So, for us, it’s not just a matter of continuing the chase, we also need to make sure we’re kind of holding on to our spot.”
“Having said that, we try not to focus too much on where we were or where we stand, but really worry about what we’re doing to put us in position to play our best.”
The Dutch open the season with a one-day tournament on August 28th at Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course in Marion at the Mount Mercy Early Bird Classic.
