Those who stopped at stores in Pella Saturday may have noticed people at entrances handing out Tootsie Rolls.
The Knights of Columbus are holding their annual campaign for persons with intellectual disabilities this week.
Joe Lickteig with the Knights says the organization is hoping to raise funds and awareness for the issues people with disabilities and their caretakers face. Lickteig says the issue is a personal one to him and many within the community.
“My sister was mentally handicapped, and the gift that relationship brought me can’t be repaid,” he says. “And the people that’ I’ve met, the parents I’ve talked to–they all feel the same way. The gift of a person with intellectual disabilities, it’s really priceless.”
Proceeds from the Knights of Columbus Campaign for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities go to Christian Opportunity Center, Pella and Pella Christian Schools, and the Iowa Special Olympics.
