A 5th grade teacher in the Pella Community School District has received an award from the President of the United States.
Joshua Steenhoek at Jefferson Intermediate School earned the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
He was one of 213 mathematics and science teachers to earn the honor from the White House, and one of four Iowa teachers to receive the distinction.
Steenhoek tells KNIA/KRLS News he has a passion to help students discover a curiosity for science in his classrooms, and loves to watch kids attempt to discover the world around them.
Winners of this Presidential honor receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion, and are invited to Washington, DC, for an awards ceremony, as well educational and celebratory events, and visits with members of the President’s Administration.
