The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has named Central College associate head softball coach Alicia O’Brien the division three assistant coach of the year.
According to the NFCA, the award “salutes the efforts of coaches for their tireless dedication to the sport of softball and to the continued education, growth and development of young women – both on and off the playing field”.
O’Brien joined us live on the Central College Radio Coaches Corner last night on KRLS and says that she’s honored to have been chosen for the award, and appreciative of the role she’s been able to play on campus.
“Central College allows me the opportunity to work with students and all student-athletes. A lot of what I do would be programming and working with the SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) group and that is what I love about Division III – they are student athletes and we can be involved in other parts of their life besides just on the field. I’m fortunate that I get to do that everyday.”
O’Brien is in her 11th season at Central College after spending 18 seasons as the head coach of Western Connecticut State University. She’s the wife of Dutch head coach George Wares.
O’Brien will be recognized at the NFCA convention in early December in New Orleans.
