The Pella football team’s first goal and hurdle in accomplishing a three-peat championship begins this week with earning a top two in the district.
And while the roster is vastly different from their title-earning teams, it’s been a similar start to the past three years in non-district action. They are 2-0, propelled by somewhat comfortable wins over Oskaloosa and DCG.
Nick Finney had a breakout game last week against the Mustangs, leading the team to a 28 point second half, and showed more and more flashes of becoming an electric cornerstone to the team.
Head Coach Jay McKinstrey says last Friday was a big step forward for Finney, who may not fill the shoes of dynamic Noah Clayberg, but may instead forge his own path as the clear leader of the 2016 Little Dutch.
“What he did on some of those plays is he became a playmaker. They weren’t necessarily what we had drawn up and that’s what’s great to see. Those were fantastic plays and it was great to see him do that. Nick’s an incredible talent at quarterback and we’re certainly excited to see him progress as the year goes on.”
Pella travels to Bondurant tomorrow night to kick of district action against the Bluejays.
