There’s an old saying in football that if you have two quarterbacks, you don’t really have one. That’s not the case this year for Central College.
The Dutch have used both senior Riley Gray and sophomore Nate Boland, and the duo has sparked Central’s offense to a 42.5 point per game clip – a big key to the team’s 4-0 start.
Coach Jeff McMartin says that one of the advantages to having two QBs is that when one of them is in the game, the other is on the sideline with a headset on listening to the coaches.
“They get to hear what we’re thinking, and they’re able to see it. So they’re signaling it in and at the same time thinking ‘Oh man, I can see that they’re in that coverage or I can see how the corner is playing that guy’. So then when they get in the game they know how they want to attack. I think it’s helped both quarterbacks to stand off to the side for a series or two and kind of get a feel for things.”
Combined, Gray and Boland have completed nearly 64 percent of their passes for 316 yards per game, with a total of 12 touchdowns against just one interception. They’re also Central’s second and third leading rushers, averaging 88 yards per game combined with four scores.
Central is up to 24th in the latest D3Football.com rankings and has a huge first place showdown against another 4-0 team, the University of Dubuque, this Saturday.
