David Kacmarynski threw four touchdown passes and ran in another as the Pella Christian football team won its opening round playoff game 49-0 over Sigourney-Keota.

While the offense has gotten the headlines this year, it was the defense that slammed the door last night.

The Cobras came in averaging well over 300 yards per game rushing out of their unique single wing offense. After gaining 104 yards in the first half, they were limited to just 39 rushing yards, and 51 total yards, in the second half.

Assistant Coach Verlan Nikkel joined us in the booth after the game on KNIA, and couldn’t stop gushing about the “D”.

“This defense has been a staple for us all year long. I don’t know that they’ve had a bad game. They’ve really played exceptionally well, and I give a lot of credit to the defensive coaches for putting the time in and working with them in the film room. Those guys put a lot of time in and I just can’t give them enough accolades.”

Noah Treimer topped the tackle charts last night with 13, and Jackson Flagel had three stops for loss.

Offensively, Levi Jungling grabbed seven balls for 118 yards, leaving him 40 shy of breaking Grant McGraw’s career receiving yardage record. He also scored two touchdowns.

Second-ranked Pella Christian is now 10-0, and will play at six-time defending state champion and number-one Iowa City Regina next Friday night in the quarterfinals.
