Pella Christian High School students are presenting a classic tale in the Vermeer Auditorium this week.
Peter Pan is coming to the stage this evening, Thursday, and Saturday at 7 p.m. Ryan Howey plays Mr. Smee, says it’s a performance for audiences of all ages.
“I think it’s a show that everyone can relate to, even in the adult word,” he tells KNIA/KRLS. “Nobody really wants to grow up, nobody wants to go work or a job every day, so it’s kind of nice to get a little escape from that and to imagine what it would be like to go to a place where you don’t have to grow up and live as a kid forever.”
The cast and crew total over 70 students, including a live stage band. Technical work also features the children and Peter Pan–who is played by Jimmy Beyer, “flying” throughout the show.
“Our director Marlo Van Peursem always likes to raise the bar, and raise the bar, and raise the bar,” Beyer says. “And eventually, the cast kind of looks at him like ‘how far can the bar really go?’”
“And this year, he showed us how far the bar can go.”
Colin Stravers plays Captain Hook, and says there is a lot of choreography and acting that goes into the show.
“As Captain Hook, I’m put a lot more characterization into the songs, and so I have to get that anger into it as well the excitement when I come up with a plan,” he says. “There’s a lot more of that characterization built into that plan and the singing and dancing.
