The Pella and Pella Christian cross country teams lent a hand to City of Pella parks staff with their annual tulip planting Saturday morning.

Parks Director Chandler Nunnikhoven tells KNIA/KRLS News the runners helped place approximately 20,000 tulip bulbs into beds along Main Street in preparation for next year’s Tulip Time festival.

“We have fun doing it,” he says. “We couldn’t ask for more to get that many tulips planted in two hours, this would have taken us over two days with our staff, so we want to keep doing this every year, because it’s awesome.”

Pella athletes Kaylee Butler and Mason Johnson say they were happy to volunteer and become closer as a team.

“It was so much fun, because we got to be in groups of different people that I normally wasn’t, and we just got to contribute to our community,” Butler says.

“The best part was helping out the entire town plant tulips for Tulip Time,” Johnson says.
