The Central College football team scored the final 42 points to earn a 49-14 win over Simpson Saturday afternoon in a game heard live on both KNIA & KRLS.

After Central struck first on a 29-yard Riley Gray touchdown run, the Storm took advantage of two Dutch turnovers to take the lead. Caleb Frye hit Ricky Reeve for a 17-yard TD and Braden Meints went over the top from a yard out to put Simpson ahead 14-7.

Central controlled the game from that point forward. Gray threw touchdown passes to four different receivers and ran another one in himself, plus Nathan Fitzgerald added a nine-yard rumble. Dutch Coach Jeff McMartin says after the Storm took the lead, his offense started playing like it was capable of playing.

Simpson Head Coach Matt Jeter told KNIA/KRLS Sports after the game that obviously no one likes to lose, especially being blown out by a rival, but what the Storm are going to do is take 24 hours to take the positives from the game and then throw it away and prepare for Coe next Saturday.

Gray finished 19-of-28 passing for 295 yards and the four touchdowns, and he added 13 rushes for 65 yards and two scores. Sam Markham caught 10 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown.

For Simpson, Frye was 14-of-24 for 151 yards and a score, and like Gray, he was his team’s leading rusher with 60 yards on 16 carries. Reeve hauled in 8 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Central improves to 7-2 and will wrap up the 2016 season next week at Luther. The Storm fall to 3-6 and will play Iowa Conference champion Coe next Saturday in Indianola.
