Top-ranked Pella is traveling to Cedar Rapids Tuesday with a state volleyball championship run in mind.

But to have a chance at hoisting a first place trophy, the Lady Dutch will have to do something they’ve never done in the U.S. Cellular Center before at state — win.

They’ve been frequent fliers to the tournament, with six appearances over the last decade, but no Pella volleyball team has ever advanced from the quarterfinals round.

Head Coach Catie Brand knows breaking that barrier is the first major step in defending their top seed in the Class 4A tournament.

“We want to be the first Pella team to win at state,” Brand says. “We know teams have been close, we know teams have gone in even being ranked high, but it just hasn’t happened yet and we want to make sure that this is the year that it happens. We want to finish number one, and we know Tuesday is a huge stepping stone to get there.”

Pella will begin state tournament action Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they take on number-eight seeded Nevada. Pregame coverage with Andrew Schneider and Wynne Veenstra begins at 3:30 from the U.S. Cellular Center on 92.1 KRLS.
