The score at the end of the first half of the Central vs. Grinnell men’s basketball game last night could have easily been the final score of many college hoops contests. The Dutch trailed the Pioneers, 70 – 69, but finished strong to win 143 – 128 to improve to 4 – 0 on the season. Coach Craig Douma said after the game that his team’s ability to stay focused on the task at hand and not “scoreboard watch” was a key part of their fourth win of the season. Despite attempting just three shots from outside the arc all game, the Dutch still took control on the boards and got numerous easy transition buckets from close range to pull away from Grinnell late. Central set a record for points in a half with 74, most points in a game with their 143, most field goals made with 52, most assists in a game with 42, and perhaps most impressive of all, highest field goal percentage for a game with 68.4. The Dutch also allowed the most points ever by just one, as the Pioneers’ quick-release style of offense gave Julian Marx the chance to shine with a whopping 51 points for the game. Three players had double-doubles for the Dutch; Colby Taylor scored 35 and grabbed ten rebounds, Ryan Kunkel scored 31 and nabbed 14 boards, and Kyle Smith had 11 points and doled out 12 assists. Central is off until next Wednesday when they head to Cedar Rapids to play Coe in the conference opener.
