A three-peat is on the line tonight for the Pella High football team as the two-time defending champion #2 Dutch (12-0) play #6 Webster City (11-1) for the class 3-A title.

The Lynx are known for their single-wing offense that chews up yards on the ground, and while Pella coach Jay McKinstrey says that they have certainly prepared for it the last few days, he’s more worried about Webster City’s “Jimmy’s and Joe’s” than he is the “Xs and Os”.

“They’re very big and very strong and they have great athletes. It’s not just the offense, it’s the types of players they have – they’re very, very good. They can do different things, and even though it seems like a real simplified offense, there’s a lot of deception in it and they can do a lot of different things. Obviously they don’t throw much statistically, but they do things well and they’re effective with what they do and they just keep the ball out of your hands.”

When Pella gets the ball offensively, McKinstrey says that they want to be able to run it a bit themselves, but he knows that most of the yards are likely to come through the air.

“It’s become a little more of our identity. We’ll mix the run in there to try to keep teams honest, but I would see us doing the same thing tonight – putting the ball in the air and then running it some to keep them honest. Hopefully we can do what we did last Thursday night and break a big one like Nick (Finney) did and at least make them honor the run.”

Kickoff tonight for the class 3-A championship between Pella and Webster City is scheduled for 7:06 at the UNI Dome. Trevor Castle and Randy Sikkema will have the play-by-play on 92.1 KRLS. Our coverage starts with the Jeromy Dingeman Concrete Football Friday Night Radio Preview Show at 5:00.
