For the first time in a few seasons, the Central men’s and women’s basketball teams won a conference game on the same night. Yesterday, it was at the hands of Dubuque; the Dutch women held control for their entire contest and breezed to a 64 – 51 win, capturing their first league “W” since facing those same Spartans in January of this year. Claire Marburger scored a game-high 30 points and added 13 rebounds, while Central’s defense did not allow a single Spartan player to score more than seven points for the game. Central’s women improved to 7 – 1 overall with the triumph. Despite shooting just 26% from the field in the first half, Central’s men overcame a 14-point deficit to notch their first league win of the season, 73 – 64. The Dutch only committed seven turnovers in the game, and made eight shots from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes to hold a lead they did not relinquish for most of the second half. Coach Craig Douma said after the game that his team kept their head up after a difficult first half and got into a rhythm when they needed it the most. Taylor finished with a team-best 17 points to go along with ten rebounds, Pete Walker scored 16, and Kyle Smith added a dozen off the bench. Central’s men are now 6 – 1 overall, and both teams improve to 1 – 1 in the Iowa Conference. The women are off until December 17th, and the men will play a Top-15 ranked Wash-U squad this Saturday, which can be heard on KNIAKRLS.com.
